Default 5th gear problem

My 98 Avenger w/420A and 5 speed started popping out of 5th gear whenever there is any torque on the tranny. What would be the most likely culprit? Linkage? Synchro? Bearing? And with 220K+ miles on it should I get it rebuilt? replaced with a remanned unit or just a used one? So far I have had 3 estimates of $2000 for a rebuild, a $1200 estimate and one guy wants to look at it first before giving an estimate. He sounds like the best choice estimating $1500 max. He also told me there are two different trannies for the Avenger, a F5MCI and a F5M20. He said the F5M20 may not need to be pulled to work on 5th gear? I can drive it now but can't use 5th gear. I was going to take it in for the repairs on the 6th so I have time to find the best solution to this problem. [:@]

The Chrysler garage had no clue what I was talking about when I asked them about two different trannies that might come with the Avenger. I sometimes wonder how Chrysler stays in business with the quality of the dealership network!

You know what Scat, the 4g63 tranny has a similar issue and here's what may be the culprit. It may not be the same tranny, but the names and items are close to the same and may help you get the idea. I hope this helps bro.

Thanks SC97, I am going to the tranny shop tonight. The guy there thinks he can fix it thru the cover just like the quick fix in the link you gave me. Thanks again.

The tranny in my Avenger does not have the same type of nut on the end like the tranny in the link. My tranny has a locking ring. But I talked to the guy and he is going to do the rebuild for under $1000. According to the book he quoted me $547 labor and he would try to cut me a deal on the price of parts. There is another shop down the road from him looking for a wrecked donor car so if the parts are too expensive I can get a good used one.
