Default V-6 Timing

I just bought a 1996 Avenger ES. I got a good deal on it ,$500 , the body and the interior are perfect . The problem comes from the motor is out of time . It is black and the only option it doesnt have is leather seats. The guy put a water pump init and didnt know how to put the motor back in time so he let it sit .My only question is how do you put a sohc motor back in time. I know how it all goes back together and how timing works but not on a sohc motor.Thanx 4 listening and any help is greatly appreciated

i suggest getting a haynes or a chilton's service guide....they come in quite handy whenever you need to do something on a car. my family has one for each car we own. they have everything you need to know about your car, how to do everything and they're normally pretty easy to follow.

I would definitely get a manual before starting this project. Or let a garage do it, but don't drive it. Our motors are interferrence motors and you could have a rod hit pistons. Granted, you may have driven it already, but I wouldn't take the chance

I didn't drive it I got it towed home. From what i read if the car is more than 3 degrees out of time the car uses the alarm system to disengage the starter and firing system. The guy i got it from said he tried to start it and it turned over so i am thinking maybe it cant be far out of time and therefore maybe the valves didnt hit the pistons. My thoughts are that i am going to put it back in time and start it then listen to it . That way maybe I can get away without pulling the heads off . Either way if its bad i still wont have in whatthe car isworth . So although I knew about the books I was trying to get away without buying one ,but considering i have a 95 ES and now a 96ES also I guess I will get one tomarrow.

yea, I highly prefer Chiltons, as they have one for practically every model car ever made since that book came out.

on a side note, whats a good mileage to replace the timing belt on our type engines? about 68,000 miles?
