Default auto trany to manual trany question

Could you take an auto trany and make it in to a manual trany with just a few modifcations. Becuase i was going to get a 3.0 swap in to future and i would like to have it manual, and i was just wondering if that could happen or should i just find a 2003 3.0 manual stratus at the junkyard and buy the whole thing?

If you keep the bottom end of the 6g73, you are pretty much stuck with having an automatic. If you have the 420a, then you can swap the manual tranny in.
The V6 has one thing that's keeping it from being converted with a manual tranny and that's the CPS sensor. The computer needs it like the I4 manual and from what I've read, there hasn't been a problem of getting a manual tranny to bolt on, it's keeping the TCU happy by providing crank location info. Exile Racing has been trying for a long time to relocate the pesky CPS and so have a few others and they have not succeeded.
I've wondered, myself, why folks haven't used the 3.0's tranny. I couldn't tell if it would work or not. Sorry bud.

Thanks alot,I always wondered if i could just use the 3.0 stratusmotor and manual trany in the Avenger. I mean why wouldnt it work the motor works in our cars so why wouldnt the whole setup. I think i should call exile and ask them if it would be possible. Because it seems to meI could be done and it should be done!!!! If no one has done this i want to be the first! lol

Well, you don't actually swap in the entire 3.0 motor, look at the sticky to see what needs to be swapped and what parts of the 2.5 are still used.

If you've got the I4 but in an auto. You are better off with that motor. The V6 is not that much faster, especially since it's an auto only motor. Your 420a can be swapped with a manual tranny though. You just need the parts from a spare Avenger.
Don't think that just because you have 4 cylinder that feels slow that swapping in a the other motor will make you go faster. This is a case of bigger IS NOT better. Your 420 has more aftermarket parts to make it more powerful and you have the option of a manual....that motor can't be that bad now, right?

it has been done. there was a guy on asec that did it. there was something about the steering linkage that had to be fabricated. BUT... he fell prey to getting a bad transmission and at that point lost interest in changing to another. he maintained that it was just abad tranny and that the swap was a success, but i don't think anyone bought his project to complete it. unfortunately, it was classed as a failed endeavor and never completed.

I remember there being something like that posted over there. I haven't seen anyone else try it though. I don't know why. I'd like to see it happen, if nothing but to have a manual V6 in an Avenger/Sebring.
That was a year or two ago too.

Avenger127 was his handle. shame to see that one die. ended up being parted out. it was a built 3.5. hasa misfire at idle, that he said he cured, but i think folks were afraid that the ignition was to blame. no one would buy her as a whole. or would have but didn't have the funds at that time.
if you want to see the end of it, do a search on asec for "3.5L 5-speed project, update"
