Default getting ready for my SAS

hey im getting ready to do my 2wd-4wd SAS swap and there are a few bits of info i cant seem to find.

1. for the steering, how do i need set it up? do i need to use the same gear box off of what ever truck i pull the front axle off of? is is there one from another vehicle that would be better, any info on how i should to go about doing the steering?

2. what transfer case should i get to put on my A500? i know ill need the TCM from a 4x4, but dose it need to be off a 4x4 dakota or what ever i get the transfer case off of, OR should i pull the trans and transfer case a one off the same vehicle wit the TCM. if i go with option 2 is there a 4x4 auto trans that still has OD to?

in my planing these are the only areas i cant find to much info on. if any one can give me some hints on this that would be grate. im not starting this for a few months but im going to start buying parts soon and i want to have my ducks in a row first

its gonna be mix and match parts and required...

its a custom fab and will be based on what axle you get, an older wagooneer front axle looks like it was more *bolt in* ability and I use that loose as a hooker on free night... but in any regards get a somplete axle with all linkages ects for steering, might only need a drop down pitman arm/ idler but who knows till you get it in there but original steering box should be fine.

v6 is gonna be weak but to change axle , front axle isn't controlled by the PCM unless it has a electronic actuator and 94 should still have the vacuum control (cap it off)

#2 you can use current drivetrain and all, the front axle is controlled by vacuum actuator all you need to do is new driveshaft front and prolly rear to compensate for lift. but again till you know axle using its all fab work ..

the front axle the more you get for steering linkages ect.. will help but will still require customizing for the width of the Dakota chassis

ya i spent a few in under the front end just looking at stuff. from what i can tell i dont have any kind if gear box. the steering column connects right to the rack and pinion via u-joint. the pump lines go right into the rack. im getting most my fab info from this http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/dodge...dana-44-a.html

but no info bout my questions

i forgot the 2wd has Rack and pinion.. i was gonna sas my 92 4x4 but decided not to due to it being immaculate shape but it had steering box... , i havent even started anythign on my sas on my 91 2wd due to purchase of a Jeep TJ ... but i pretty much have a complete rolling 4x4 chassis froma full size with dana 60 and dana 70 ..

you can see about steerign system from somethign like a Cherokee or a 4x4 ram/dakota ect..

ah and i misread the transferecase question... you would need a 4x4 tranny/transferecase/rear and front driveshaft(custom lenght) since i beleive the tail shaft on the 2wd isnt removable to add a Tcase if you get same tranny but 4wd its mostly mechanical but can vouch 100% if pcm remains same between 2wd and 4wd tranny... but if gonna go 5 speed its different..

see thats more like the info i was looking for, im just wondering how i would need to mount it, ill prolly have to come up with something custom. and il looks like the steering column will spline right on to a gear box.

and i just went out and looked and u called it. no removable tail unit. so is the a trans, transfer case with o/d i can use? and id the transmission/ transfer case mount in the same place on it?

i cant find info tho if crossmember is different everything that comes up that i see is that standard and auto are different, but dosent say if 2wd and 4wd are...

you can use a dakota 4x4 tranny/transfercase etc...(this is what i will be doing but i got a 5.2 manual) and should bolt in just need the modified driveshafts since rear needs to be lifted to compensate, Crazy's info is great and he might be able to shine in some more if he see's this post, i can only help with what i know so far since im in process of the same , but its moving at about the speed of politics..lol

ya im not going to be doing mine till income tax time, so im just getting all my info together, at this point what ever i pull the tran/tranf case out of im going to take all the shift linkage and shifter for the 4x4 to try and cut down the custom work on that.

mines going to be only on the beach and dunes so im not going to be doing the crazy giant lift on mine cuz its not needed.

A steering box from a 78-79 Ford F-250 is a pretty popular swap. It bolts right on the outside of the framerail, which makes installation pretty simple.

Fortunately for me, mine already came with a steering box that worked fine without modification.
