truck tries to crank in gear??
Hello, I have a 1996 dakota 4 cylinder. This is my extra truck i use from time to time. I drive it to work for a week bout every other couple months just to keep everything going. My problem is when i parked it to sit for a while everything was fine .When i got ready to use it and tried to crank it the motor would turn when i hit the starter?? The clutch is hard and seems like it always has. I checked the fluid in reservoir it was full. Now i put the truck in neutral and it cranks rite up....i try to put it in gear with the clutch in and it just grinds and won't go in any gear. I turn off motor put it in gear and try to crank it and motor turns with the starter??? I just replaced the clutch a couple years ago with a new clutch kit?? Could it be the hydraulic clutch?? If so i'm gonna buy one that is already pre-bleed. I haven't checked the fork at the throw out bearing seeing if it moves when i press the clutch yet either. I was wanting to get as much input as i could so i would know what route to start on first. Thanks and any info would be appreciated.

It sure sounds like one of the cylinders on the clutch has failed. I'm assuming you checked to make sure the fluid is full. It is possible the clutch has frozen though. If you pull the slave cylinder and it works fine, the clutch plate may be frozen. If it doesn't work, then it's bad. Definitely check the clutch fork before you start throwing parts at it.
fluid was full.I took off the slave cylinder and i could press it down with a large socket and it was strong. Can i take that rubber boot off the fork to see if the throw out bearing is working when i push in the clutch. Thanks for your in put..
If the master cylinder went bad, the slave might still be good. As for removing the boot, you have my permission. It's been so long since I worked on a Dakota with a clutch, I don't remember details. If you can look inside and have someone push the clutch pedal and watch for movement, that will tell you if it's your cylinders or the clutch is stuck. My Dakota was a 4X4 so that is more complex.
