Drive shaft shenanigans
92 dodge dakota 2wd 5.2 v8
Howdy all, i recently had my drive shaft break on me while driving and went to a shop to get a new one piece made for me. I stuck it on, because i never put on the retaining rings for the rear pinion yoke it fell out and dragged for a bit. (Was only going around 25) however i put a new u joint in and got the drive shaft back in and now whenever i drive i hear a clunking noise every so often as if its binding on something. Over 55 there is also very intense vibrations. Ive boiled down to thinking its a few things.
When the drive shaft fell it got off balanced
- I dont think so cuz it really wasnt that messed up other then the paint coming off.
When it broke off the first time the pinion yoke got off center or it bent the rod connected to the transmission
- Its hope this isnt it
The new u joint doesnt fit
- i mean it seems fine and nothing has axial or radial play so idk.
if anyone could think of anything else id really appreciate the help. I did put white paint all over the bottom side of the truck to see if anything was rubbing and looks like nothing is. The gasket going to the transmission was also leaking and id does have slight play up near the transmission idk if this is normal though. Thanks.

Did they completely replace your old driveshaft? If that's the case, go back and see 'em, tell 'em what's up, see what they suggest. They may wanna charge you to check and see if you bent it, or if it is now out of balance. I would also question if it isn't just a bit long, and the clunk you hear is it bottoming out on the trans.... (that would be VERY bad....)
Yeah its completely replaced. They lathed out the new drive shaft and welded the slip yoke on and everything. Thats probably the smartest idea. To bad they are an hour 30 mins away 😅. I hadnt even thought of that. It sounds like its back in the rear axle where its clunking so i dont know. I honestly dont know if its even safe to drive right now.

Easier than making the road trip. Not sure I would wanna drive it the way it is either.....
