1995 Dakota A/C
My 1995 3.9L Dakota has had weaker air conditioning for a while, and now it is grossly inefficient. The vehicle has not had freon added ever, so my 1st assumption would be to try that. How do I go about adding freon to my '95 Dodge? Stupid question, but I don't know about autos. Motorcycles, a bit, but their a/c systems never cause a problem.
Take it to a A/C shop. No longer can you buy the freon and the filler kit at your lcl parts shop. Problem is a A/C shop will tell you you need to 99 point check and evacuate the system and the re-fill all adds up to big bucks. I am in the same situation with my 90 (see my current post) If you can talk an A/C shop into just a top-off shot of freon that would be the best thing. Then there is the type of freon you need. I don't know if 1995 still had the old school freon like my 1990. If so hard to find that freon.
I've checked out the system - as much as I know how to. The fan does engage when the A/C is turned on, but only momentarily. That may be because it was in the shade on a 70 degree day, or it could be a malfunctioning a/c clutch, I don't know. It was cycling on to off every 5-10 seconds while the air was turned on. I have found two fittings on the A/C hoses, one on the metal pipe that gets cold, and another on the compressor. Am I correct in assuming that the cold hose fitting should be the low pressure fitting?
Strangely enough, my 95 Dakota 3.92wd has had the exact same issues. On lukewarm days (a rare thing in Georgia) its fine, but is soon as the mercury rises to, say 85 degrees, it gives up the ghost and is soon superceeded bylowered windows.
Exactly my problem. I'm not sure if it is related to the A/C clutch, or just lowrefrigerant levels. I guess that if no one here will tell me anything, I'll just have to try to learn on my own what to do. I had the general idea that I might find at least a slightly knowledgeable answer here.
So, I guess that you still have the same problem with your '95, too?

Answer. 99.9% it need's freon. Only one way to get freon added is by a a/c shop. Unless you know someone that knows someone that has a connection to a a/c shop that will add freon and you slip them a $20 you will in fact have to pay the piper if you want it fixed. I am just living with mine.
So, I guess that I've just said the wrong thing here, seeing as no one seems to be willing to help. At all. You know, at first I thought it was just the ignorance of my question, but after I saw a good response to the guy who can't make his cassette flip, I figure that's not it. So, did I do something wrong? What gives, eh?
