Default 88 backfires/sputters/stalls

my 88 3.9 runs great unless you stomp on the gas, then it just like falls on it's face. the motor will completely cut out until you let off the gas. you really dont even have to stomp on it, it happens whenever you would accelerate any heavier than normal. i'm thinking either fuel delivery problem or coil. also, sometimes the rpms will surge at idle, i dont know exactly how much because it doesnt have a tach. any tips?

Put a tach on it, then check the timing. If that seems all ok, I would go through the fuel system.

yea, im going to do a routine tune up on it first, and if it still does it, then it might be something more severe. the surging only occurs when the motor is still cold. is there a way to clean up the throttle body? the TBI is confusing me, on my 2001 you can just take the tb off and clean it.
