89 Dakota A/C Issue
Hi all, I have a 1989 Dodge Dakota sport 4X4 that has a 3.9 engine in it. I have over 225,000 miles on it and it runs as strong as ever. My A/C has always blown out cold air and I use the R12, My A/C still blows out cold air but lately there has been a problem.
My A/C will blow cold then the air will stop even though the fan blower still sounds like it's blowing the air yet nothing comes out, it will then start again for a few minutes then go out again, then start, etc...
Has anyone else had this problem and or can anyone tell me what the problem is?
Thanks

Sounds like the clutch for the compressor is cycling. This could be due to too high or low of pressure on the A/C lines. If your system is setup basically the same as mine (minus the fact yours is R-12), power has the flow thru the low pressure switch (located on the accumulator, which is on the passenger side, rear of the engine compartment) and than thru the high pressure switch (located right off the compressor).
Try disconnecting the connectors on those switched and placing a jumper wire between the two contacts on each connector, and see if the cycling goes away. If it does not, you have a problem somewhere else.
If that "solves" the problem, I would get a test kit to make sure the pressure on the A/C system is acceptable. Having too high or too low of pressure can cause problems.

Hi, thanks for the response, BTW- My A/C uses the R-12 freon not the R-22 as you stated.
