If you mean in the bed, I wouldn't go over what's recommended in the manual. For towing, my '93 3.9 L. V6 is rated to tow 5,200 lbs., and I tow a 4,500 lb. travel trailer with no problems.

Just be careful not to overload, and make sure you have good brakes!

My old dakota would pull and haul with any full sized pickup but stopping was always an adventure. they really should have put bigger brakes on them.

I had a 1992 club cab and I towed quite a bit with it.stopping was an adventure with the original brakes. My remedy was to take the front hubs from an 89 dakota and put them on the front(for the 5 lug wheels) and then I switched the rear axles to the 5 lug axle and added a set of 11 by 3 backing plates and drums off of an old Roadrunner I had laying around. Not only got a greater selection of cheap wheels to buy but had much better rear braking capacity and retained the anti lock feature.Any hubs and drums off of an 8 3/4 or the 8 1/4 rear ends will fit on a Dakota.Every old C-body in the junkyards had at least 11 by 2 1/2 drums.Good cheap trick for brakes.

I have hulled a nice fat trailer that weighed about 5,000. And loaded the bed with 3,000lbs. Hell of of lot of concrete. Ialso have loaded up 1,700 of tile. That is highest twoI have done.I havea ram 2500 rear springs Along with air shocks (added in before the springs)but I have never use them I dont put much psi in them. and trany and all is strong enough for it. Ya the brakes suck but I have the best pads and drilled and slotted rotors. Still can be scarry. But just go slow and use the engine brake if you need too.
