electrical gremlins
new to posting, not to the forum. thanks for all the help over the months.
i have an 89 dak 4x4 sport 3.9 auto.
started the truck and it idled high. the idle speed solonoid seemed to not know where to go. checked the timing and it was fine for 2 or 3 revs then the timing mark was gone followed by a miss in the engine, then back to normal for 2 or 3 revolutions of the crankshaft. had to leave so i checked the codes and it showed nothing but the regular 2 codes, key cycle and air conditioning.
got on the highway and put the pedal down, the engine temp shot way up ( probably the timing ? ) going downhill under light throttle it cooled down. going up a high hill under heavy throttle i heard a loud hum from the back of the engine, then it sputtered and died
towed it home and checked the distributor and found that the ring for the hall effect was loose and toasted the inside of the dist. but the plastic holding the ring looked melted. next i checked the resistance in the coil, it was also fried. i then checked the neg wire (black with grey stripe ) for the coil and it had 12 volts with the ignition on, huh ! then i checked the pos wire (grey with black stripe ) with the ignition on and it read 0, what! but it was grounded.
i then checked the fuel pump by bypassing the relay, and nothing, but it was grounded according to the voltmeter. can power still make the loop if the pump is shot. i checked all the grounds and they are good, inside and outside the cab. the wiring is like new because of yearly undercoating. still the same, no codes and power in the neg. coil wire.
i replaced the coil, cap, rotor button, dist. plugs, computer, and alt. because the battery was not fully charging and its almost new.
thanks for any help.
