anyone out there have a pre-magmun 3.9 complete rebuild. i would like to find out how much it would cost. the local engine rebuilder here has to remove it, rebuild, and replace the engine. i dont have the equipment to do this right now. the engine is carboned up quite bad. the truck has 200000 kms ( 160000 miles ) on it.

would it be worth it with that many miles on it. i have done lots of work on the truck. the tranny works good, so does the transfer case and brakes are all new from front to back including lines. the body is also in good shape. its a 89 4x4 3.9 sport. i guess my question is how much life does the rest of the drivetrain have on it on average. i have an 88 le for parts that has 300000 kms on it, it runs but putting that motor in is taking a big chance. if i could get that many kms out of mine i would be quite happy.

theres only one shop in town that rebuilds engines and i dont want them taking me for a ride, so im looking for an estimate for the job from someone whos had it done and did it turn out to be worth the money

I had my 3.9 magnum rebuilt lastmonth and it ran $980. I don't believe there is much difference between the magnum and non-magnum other than the cam and roller lifters. The $980 price tag included new rings and bearings, a cam and lifters, oil pump, timing set and all gaskets. The engine has 280,000miles, burned some oil andhad lifter tap noise when I pulled it. I'd get more estimates or try to get some help if you can and pull the engine yourself.You can rent an engine lift and engine stand or look for a used one on craigslist or the local paper....that will save you some money.
