Default 1996 Dakota water pump

Trying to replace water pump on 96 dakota, 3.9L V6. I can't break the tensioner pully bolt. I'm gonna borrow a breaker bar to try tommorow. Am I doing something wrong? Once I get the serpentine belt off do I remove the fan assembly next, and then just pull the bolts that connect the pump. I have all the hoses disconnected. Just want to sure I'm headed in the right direction and make sure there are no gotcha's.

Thanks!!!!

Loosen the fan FIRST! The belt will help you loosen the fan .15 millimeter socket on the tensioner and push it toward the passenger side and the belt comes out.Don't forget to replace the o-ring and bypass hose as well as the thermostat gasket at the same time

I am new to the group but I need help. I have a 1996 Dodge Dakota and I am trying to replace the water pump. I got the pump in but here is my problem. On the back of the pump housing ( looking fromthe front of the truck) Their is an outlet that has a metal pipe comming from it. This metal pipe has an oring on the end of it. When I put the new pump on, This metal pipe won't seal. I have tried everything short of JB Weld. to get it to seal. Any suggestions?????

Make sure the o ring is not twisted in the hole, use a little permatex, and make sure the black pipe is bolted to the timing cover on the correct hole so that the pipe is seated properly.

Better yet. You can buy a waterpump for a 92. It will bolt right up. Get a longer piece of heater hose and it will go right on the nipple coming off the pump. This way the O ring and little black tube are gone.

You need to remove the entire tensioner bracket and soak the allthread rod and tensioner nut the pully is attatched to in penetrating oil, not WD 40 and work it back and forth gradually until it frees up. I just spent a couple hours doing the same thing
