TBI to MPFI conversion??
I have an 88 dakota 4X4 3.9L TBI. I would like to convert it to the newer style fuel injection with the injector per cylinder. First, can it be done? Second, what all would I need to convert it, I'm thinking intake, throttle body, computer and wiring harness. Am I gonna need the heads also or will the newer setup bolt to my heads?
Thanks in advance

On that model year, it won't be done easily, the MFI uses a different intake manifold, and PCM just for starters, and as yours is pre-mag, that would also hinder the conversion. You could swap in a magnum 3.9
I know this don't mean much but, it has the3.9L magnum emblems on the fenders. looks pretty original. I don't mind swapping intakes I'm just wandering if the MFI intake will just bolt to my heads, if not could I swap out the heads also?
The simplified answer would be No.The newer "magnum" heads had the intake bolts that went straight down instead of angled like the earlier motors and the Magnums also oil through the pushrods and not through the rocker arms so while it is possible to intermingle all of these parts,It's not a simple bolt on deal. Not to mention you would have to change the entire wiring harness, the fuel tank, pump and lines and a couple of other things to make it work.Nothings impossible but some things are not economicaly feasible.
Okay if I can't upgrade that way is there anything I can do to get some more power out of this thing? Also, I was told my truck probaly has a 904 tranny, if i'd swap in a 727 it would help free up some power. Any thoughts on that?
honestly there are no easy or cheap ways to get power out of a 3.9 pre-mag. I dont think your truck has a 904, i might be wrong but isnt a 904 actually a 727 with overdrive? you mentioned that it had magnum 3.9 emblems on the truck. For that year, someone wouldve had to put them on. I have an 88 and it just says"V-6 3.9 liter". Somone could've already swapped it to a magnum 3.9 i suppose. Just look at the engine and if you see fuel injectors and a fuel rail then it is a magnum.
Your truck will have a 904 trans if it is stock .If it had a 3.9 magnum swaped into it you would all ready have port injection .If you put a 727 into it, if anything you would loss a little HP.The 727 takes more power to turn .
