'87 3.9 Automatic Transmission Fluid
Ok I keep hearing conflicting information and would like some other opinions...
I was told at the auto parts store that for the 87 Dakota 3.9 that I regular Dextron/Mercon ATF is just fine. From others I hear to NEVER use Dextron in the Dodge trannies.
Any suggestions and why?

The shop my aunt had taken her 93 Dakota for years flushed and filled it with Dextron every two years or so. When I was given the truck (now with 300K plus miles), she said the transmission was replaced once a few years ago but I can't say the Dextron killed it....I continue to run Dextron in it and it shifts fine. When I dropped the pan a few months ago, the fluid was pretty clean.
i found this when i changed to atf4 a few years back, it only goes back to 89. maybe someone knows if the tranny 2 years earlier was different. my 89 definately runs better with the atf4
