i am about to have a 300+ hp 318 and want to retain the factory transmission. Can the A500 be built to handle this kind of power? if not what is a good alternative that will bolt up to my stock np231.

Truck: 1991 dodge dakota 4wd. 3.9L V6 2" lift 33" thornbirds. Single cab long bed.

 

Yes you can. I have a A518 in mine. I set it Texas to get it rebuilt, I am in Pa it cost 225 for shipping. This was a couple of years ago. Couldn't get it built in my area for that price, to handle the horsepower i needed. Go to www.phoenixtrans.com.

 

Yep, mine handles my 400HP 360 and I beat on it constantly.

I've seen the A500s handle up to 500HP and the A518s up to 700HP

 

do they make shift improve kits for the a518's ? I can't seem to find one myself

How is that transmission doing? Were you happy with the build quality? How many miles have you put on it?

sorry to thread jack.but how do you tell what tranny you have... my 1990 2wd reg shortbox 3.9 5 speed I've looked all around down there and cant find any tags on it. theres one on the side but its too fadded out to see what it says.
