Default cat removal.....

well im going to get flamed for this im sure,

91 dakota 4x4 auto 5.2L

ok so there is a pipe that goes into the cat and looks as if it comes from the engine.... i think it has something to do with emmisions, wether it is sucking or blowing air into the cat i dont know. But my question is whats it doing and if i take the cat off and plug that pipe will i be ok?

i could care less about emissions......

Now that is just insensitive to the environment... how could you say such a thing?

Yes, the older Dakota's had an air pump to send air to the cat.
Mine doesn't have that, but I would guess that running the cat away and doing something with that pipe wouldn't hurt anything.

meh, haha.......ok yea i figured, looked as if it was comming from some sort of unit up front that kind of looked like a AC unit type of deal and was ran off the belt. I wonder if i can bypass that thing with a shorter belt, probably free up a couple horses...

if anyone can find me more information on this sort of air pump system that would be great. Im trying to find something on google but thats not working so well.

I have asked this question here before, no ans. I do know it blows air into the side of the cat. Ideal thing to dois route it into the side of the pipe you replace the CAT with. If you start taking off parts up stream at some point the computer will detect it and will show maint code or will not run right. This is the reason i have not taken mine off yet, please keep up the thread when you figure it out and what you do.

i took the air pump off my f150 but it was a v belt so i just took that belt off and the pump, but i took my cat out and plugged up all of the other hoses for the emissions... made little plugs out ofa wooden dowel. that worked fine for tat one, so mabey it will for yours too.

hmmm. id really like to find a website that explains its whole purpose and stuff like that. I dont see why we would need it. pumping air into the exhaust sounds useless and stupid to me.... just diluting the polutants coming out of the tail pipe

Adding air to the Cat helps dilute the emmisions just like you said. Basically, the only reason an air pump was installed in the first place is so vehicles that dont have a high combustion efficiency could pass an emmission test. It makes it appear as though the exhaust is cleaner because it is mixing good air with the burnt fuel and air mixture, causing the test machine to read more oxygen than there really is. If you think about it, in a perfect world a gasoline engine wouldnt produce any oxygen in the exhaust. It would only produce water. But the only way that would happen is if the combustion eficiency was at 100%. And we all know the government wouldnt allow a car like that to hit the market, because it wouldnt use as much fuel. Therefore, les money to line their pockets with. Anyway, It isnt going to hurt anything if you remove it.

Also the air injected into the CAT mix with the unburnt gas and the screens in the CAT get red hot and air enables the unburnt gas to burn off.
