Default Shift lever indicator loose

I have an 89 Dakota on which the column shifter position indicator does not match the transmission. It's always too far to the right by one position. If it's in park the indicator says reverse, in reverse it says neutral, etc.
How difficult is it to adjust the indicator and what is involved?

It's not hard to adjust, it's hard not to break the line, in my case anyways. There's a little fishing line like string on the indicator, it has a specific spot on the column to wrap it up.

I tried mine, it broke. Tried to tape it, holds for a little bit.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
