Default Underpowered 89

I've got the 1989 Dakota Sport auto 3.9 4x4. Its very underpowered. I get good power in first, second lags a lot, and third is alright. I'm not terribly familiar with this truck yet, so I'm not sure what it is. Also, when you go from Park to Drive, you can hear it shift. Or when you go from Reverse to Drive, you can hear it. Its sort of a clunk.
Thanks

The idea of this post was to elicit some kind of response from a person familiar with this issue. I was looking to get an idea of whats going on with my transmission so I can get right to the problem without wasting money to fix things that are aren't broken. But, thank you for your irrelevant bit of information. I'm sure it will help me later in life.
Thanks again,
DruP

Mabey oglejust doesnt know about what might be wrong, everyone has their own say and he was just throwing in his $.02. My 1996 dakota 4x4 shifts kinda hard going from park to reverse..but is fine everywhere else. like oglejust said, i guess dodges have tranny flaws, as long as it reverses im fine with it. as for power when under load, its only the engine i believe...how would the tranny lower the power going to the rear wheels..the engine probably just has low torque in 2nd or something.

If you want replies, don't be a dick to people who reply. Now with that out of the way, the clunk could be your tranny, U-joints, or rear diff. We can't diagnose that over the internet, you might as well be asking us to tell you where an oil leak is coming from. As for power, it's a 3.9, and I don't think '89 even had port injection and roller cams. You don't have a powerhouse. If you think something is actually wrong with it, take it to a mechanic. So far, you haven't really described any particular problem. But you have an old truck, regardless you should expect problems here and there.

my 89 has been doing that since i bought it in 89, the 3.9 really is a slug with the automatic tranny, and its always clunked.
