Do you meen like moves alittle before park locks it? Because that is normal. The only thing I can suggest is putting on the parking brake when you park. or does it move more than and 1in or 2. If it moves more than that you may have damage withing the tranny.

It will slip backwards more than a few inches until I put it in park again which usually holds it in place. When it slips, it makes a clicking sound.

just taking a guess, but your tranny needs a good servicing..im no expert but does that mean the teeth on the gear are chewed up?

There is a parking paw that locks the tranny in park. That is worn out. Stick a 2x4 under a tire. Thats all I would do. I know on some vehicles you can replace it without removing the tranny, idk about the Dakota.

ya, it will be the park pin. just use your E brake if it still works when you park. unless you plan on keeping the truck for a while, then you should fix it.

Thanks for the quick responses, Right now I plan on keeping it for a while even though it has so many quirks like door locks not working and odd eletrical problems. The engine keeps going strong though. I will probally see how the parking brake works for right now. What I have been doing is opening the door and seeing if I can push it backwards with my foot. If it stays, I'm good!

I had the same thing happen to my 93'. Its to do with your shift linkage. On the right hand outside of your transmission where the linkage attaches to the transmissionmaybe worn (the plastic bushing on the gear selection point is where mine was failing) causing the parking pin to not fully seat due to slop in the linkage. I know mine would sometimes seat properly and others would not. Either adjust it or replace the worn parts.
