I'm putting a 1970's 318 in my dakota (tired of the 3.9) and I was wondering what size of carb would be right for the 318, I've got a 550 rodchester that I could easily get my hands on, seems right to me. usually 600 - 650's are good for 350's and 360's.
Are you talking about a 2bbl? Because Quadrajets are all at least 680cfm or so. They're also all spread bores, which have different mounting points than square bore carbs. You need to give more details on the engine in particular. The carb size isn't just dictated by the size of the engine, it's what you have inside it that counts. A wild 318 needs more carb than a mild 350. Regardless, I'd run a 600 or 650.
i run a 600 edelbrock electric choke. very good carburetor because it isa one piece design unlike holly, meaning it wont leak.
Those Edelbrock carbs are just rebadged AFB's. Edelbrock bought the rights to repro the carbs from Carter. Personally if I'm going for a square bore carb, Carter/Edelbrocks are my last choice. Holley/Demon carbs are easier to work on, tune, and get parts for. And the only Holley I've ever had that leaked did so because of my own stupidity.
It depends on how it's built. If it's just stock I would go with something 600-650. Try to avoid Edlebrock, I have a 750 on my 360 and it's just junk. Holly's are pretty good.
