Limited Slip
This question is for Fox, Dirt Track Racer:
I noticed you have a limited slip in your truck, something I want to do. I found out that limited slip differentials are as rare as hens teeth on 1st generation Dakotas for some reason. Was yours stock or did you build it or have it built?
Lets start a thread on this, I have lots of questions.

Mine came stock from the factory, chrylser calls them the sure-grip and its a cone clutch type LSD. I didn't even know I had it tillI seen it in my service manual and then looked at the laber under my hood. Makes sense though Its a freakin pain makin U-turns[:@]
But I can tell you right now I've changed my gear oil 3 times and once only found very small trace amounts of metal chips and that was the first time Id changed when I got my dak from the previous guy.
Overall I know im lucky and this LSD is badass cause in all the times I've been 4x4ing I have never gotten stuck insand, mud, water, clay dirt. Beileve or not.
Like crazy said on a preivous post the 8.25 axle is comparable to the dana 44 I second that!

Guess your one in a million. I can't find a used limited slip in any ratio, so obviously rare. I saw some kind of gizmo that is called Power Track or Trax, I think, that bolts in place of the spider gearsmeaningI won't have to replace the carrier. It's advertised to make no noise around corners but act like a locker in the straights. I know this soundsto good to be true, and the price is high. I've been told that these units are a ripe off; and to stay away. Anyone had experience with them?
The only other alternative is to buy a different carrier and install either the cone or clutch type limited slip. I have experience with the clutch type as per my 5.0 stang which is worn out and needs rebuilding so I'm not sure if the cone or clutch type is the way to go.
Gonna do something, just don't know yet, need input so help me you know it alls.

Ya I have had both no-slip and lockright from powertrax. They are worth it. As long as they are installed correctly like the instrutions say it can handle everything. I have a high horsepower 5.9 and I cant destroy it. They are storng, quite and great. The only draw back to them is on the streets, when making a tight turn from a complete dead stop. If you give to much gas you will make the tire chip just a little. so you do have to have a light foot when making turns from a dead stop. but if you hammer it you will not brake it at all. I do some serious offroading and have done rocks to mudd to high speed sand runs. no problems at all. like you said just replace spider gears wich is realy easy. The price is high but when you look at all of the other opitons for lockers it is easly the cheepst. The only other cheepest is junkyard, or weld you spiders together.
You can lift up the rear end. and turn one tire. if theother tire turns the same direction, then you do have a limited slip. If it turns the oposite way than its the standard open diff. The fronts are open, none ever came with a lsd. or a locker.
search gears r us .com you have to know what size it is . mine was on tag under hood i put in a390 limited slip. 1995 5.2 had a 4.10 had a guy line it up ,and he blew it up.

i have been pondering a mopar factory limited slip for mine, i have found a place that hs alot of parts for these trucks that has one for $290 http://www.monicattichrysler.com/com...?idCategory=73. but i am sure the way i drive i will brake the factory unit. so the powertrax replaces the spider gears in the open carrier? i was looking at those too. i am thinking about just welding them up and dealing with it not wanting to turn, i will just steer it with the gas pedal if i have too

Ya the lockrights are easy to install. I would say dont weld up the spiders. I did that on My TA after I burned up the limited slip (cheep chevy parts). It is a pain to steer at slower speeds. It is too much for a everyday truck. I only did it because its a dragstrip only car.
