new here, tranny questions
Hi all new here, got me an 88 dakota V6 autonot to long ago, just did a top end rebuild on the engine a couple of weeks ago, about a week ago i checked the tranny fluid, itwas low so i added some dextronII after asking some idiot at parts store, tranny took a dump the next day, dropped the pan and found LOTS of metal shavings and big pieces of something, tranny wont shift from 1st to 2nd unless i play with the pedal and will not **** to 3rd no matter what i do...
(I THINK TRANNY IS A 3 SPEED no od switch on dash)
Now what i need to know is up to what year tranny will fit, so i can buy a "new" one from the junkyard, i dont wanna have to mod anything just want one that will drop in and work.
thanks in advance, need to know asap!!! [:'(]

On the drives side of the transmissions, stamped just above of the pan, there should be a number. On my 1996, it was covered in grease and grime, so I'm sure you'll need to wipe a lot of crap of yours as well.
It may have a letter before it, and may have extra numbers after it, but your basically just looking for any of the following.
Anyways, if it has any of the following numbers, you have a 3-speed:
4446367
4431424
4329628
If you have any of the following numbers, you have a 4-speed:
4431674
4531281
4431675
4505167
4531282
4531283
These numbers are coming straight out of the Chrysler factory parts manual, and I did check to make sure the one found on my truck matched up, and it did.
Apparently there are some slight differances between some of the transmissions, but as long as its' the same one (you said you just want another 3-speed) and it's the same length, it should bolt right in.

old tranny is out of the car, i ended up pulling the engine to to replace the oil pan gasket and check the main and rod bearings, it should go back in tomorrow, i will be taking pictures and uploading them soon.
I guess everything is going good for you. I didn't have that luck with my trans project, it took me like 2 weeks (and than the transfer case wasn't working right...), but than again, it was pretty much the first major work I'd ever done to a vehicle.
ok the number on the old tranny is
PK 4431424 9671 5562 indicating it is a 3 speed
Now the "new" one has the following
PK52117688 1441 4536
i have not yet installed it, will it work? the both look almost identical
