Default Aftermarket Ammeter

I want to instal an after market ammeter. The instructions aren't real clear when it comes to the Dakota. Do I unhook the battery post on the starter to make the connection , or do I make the connection with the small wire connected to the connection bar, or is there another way? Would really appreciate a real fast reply!! I have a 1994 Dakota, V-6.

It doesnt go to the starter, how many wires you got ? 1 goes to alt. output, 1 goes to pos bat term. the other two get wired to the dash lite circuit and ground for the lite.

I have one wire of the alternator that gets lost in the wiring somewhere and I have two wires off the starter that goes to the battery post and is joined by another wire making 3 wires at the battery post two large black wires and a smaller red wire, at the battery.

I'm talking about the wires coming out of the back of the gauge!

Those are simple one's positive and the other negative. For the light, which I took out. I need to know the wires to hook to the battery and the alternator post, which wires, since the instructions were clear as mud and really didn't cover the 1994Dodge Dakota. I have tried your method myself, but I think that puts it in parallel and I'm sure it needs to be in a series. Thus, I need someone who has done this application and knows the proper way to do the wiring.

I have this guide, thank you for forwaring it. It's what I used when I hooked up a wire to the alt and then the bat.Nothing happened as explained before. This is why, again, I'm in need of someone who has performed this operation before and knows what needs to be done. When it dries up I was thinking about taking the battery cable off the large post (pos), of the starter, hooking it to the battery side of the meter then from the meter hooking up a wire to go back down to the same post,on the starter,I think this would work anybody know for sure????
