i just put a 28 in oval thrush glass pack on my 87 dakota it gives a nice sound but i want a hair bit more out of it.

 

Get a high flow cat. or gut out your old one.

 

Bigger exhaust pipe and some headers will liven it up too.

Take it out and ram a rod through it. Not exactly legal in some states, but there you go.

 

the side or the end

 

Through the input/output ends. You can just cut it, but going through the side, or just cutting it and pulling it's stuffing out, just opens the exhaust prior to the muffler/glass pack. Won't enhance the sound the way you're looking to.

Of course you could always remove the cat compleetly and replace it with a piece of pipe 1/2 inch smaller than you exhaust pipe (to keep backpressure). Once again, illegal if anyone's watching you.
