1995 Dodge Dakota dies
My teenage son's 1995 Dodge Dakota has been dying when at a stop light or after starting it up in the driveway. Sometimes it won't start back up, but if you come back later it starts. The gas guage wasn't working and it was spitting out the following PCM codes:12, 42, 53, 42, 32, 31, 55We had to replace the fuel pump to fix the gas guage problem so we gave it a try, but it died in the driveway today and wouldn't start back up. Later on it did start. We disconnected the batter to clear the codes. The truck was idling in the driveway and the check engine light did come on briefly. Got the codes again and now it is:12,32,31,55From what I read this seems to indicate a fault in the EGR diagnostics and in the purge solenoid circuit. What exactly does this mean and what should we do next?Any help would be appreciated. We really don't know a lot about cars and my son really can't afford to spend a lot of money for someone else to diagnose what the problem is. We just need to get it fixed![/align]
The EGR would definitely create the stalling out issue. The purge solenoid circuit they refer to is a sensor to the right of the Throttle body, I've noticed 9 times out of ten, once the EGR is replaced, this code disappears, however in this case, this might be what's causing the restart condition you're having. I believe the solenoid circuit wires into the Auto shut down circuit. You could have a broken wire splice in the loom going to the ASD relay. After you replace the EGR, see if the trouble clears up any. If not, the next step would be to cut into the loom and repair that splice. You initially had ASD come up, 42. That code will appear and disappear faster than a ghost. My feeling is the EGR won't be the only problem and that the ASD wire splice will need to be repaired. If you dig into the loom, the splice I'm speaking of is 3 reds going to 1 red wire. There is also another splice 3 blues going to one blue, either one or both can cause your problem. If the splices look fine, try swapping out the starter and ASD relays, if the engine won't even turn, the relay is bad, swap them again and the engine should turn.
