I spotted this stepside on my way back from the Manchester Airport in NH! Very rare and there were several other vehicles on the property for sale I really wanted to ask if I could buy the Dakota but it was about 5am so I did not go knocking...however since this is the ONLY stepside Dakota I have ever seen in person I had to trespass and go knocking on the truck itself haha I can confirm almost 100% that the bed on these trucks are completely made out of fiberglass and not steel. I want to lift one for a winter truck that would be great for New England.

Damn that stepside is ugly. I believe they should have stopped making those somewhere around 1975. I also love that they generally cost more after 1980, when traditionally the stepside was the budget option. Just my opinion, if you like it then go for it - just be careful with that fiberglass bed, definitely won't be carrying much of a load.

In other news, here's my truck under a tree...

The inside bed is made of galvanized steel, the metal on the steps is aluminum, the tail gate is also metal with a fiberglass skin on the outside and is rather heavy.

Wow looks like a one of a kind "peaked" visor as well?

So the outside of the box is covered in fiberglass this thing will last forever! Also sounds heavy duty enough on the inside for a payload, I like them only acceptable with a GenI clip though.

Like I said I want one for a winter truck, with a little bit of front end work (shave corner markers) the step side does not look that out of place...I think the rollbar helps the mating line between the cab and box, and a roll/light bar that attaches where the Express exhaust pipes go would also help the transition line.

The po of the 87 dakota express i have said he could not keep rear tires on it, and in the winter is was very very bad, the back end is to light and it needed alot of weight in the back. po said the rear would go through tires 3x faster then the front even with the 6cyl 2bbl carb it would spin the tires easy due to the light weight on the rear

I would lift it and make sure it's 4x4 functional then add weight to the rear via a solid filled bumper, spare tire weight and possibly fill the roll bar so its solid like the bumper.
