Default 93 dakota engine/transmission swap question's

ok guys need some questions answered,,please,,i've got a 93 dak 4x4 3.9 magnum and i've been having some tranny problems (slipping between 2nd-3rd) so i've been looking and of course i have the stand alone 2 yr unique tranny thats as hard as hens teeth to find ,,can't swing the cost of a complete rebuild,,but i do have access to a 1st gen dak i beleive it's somewhere in the 93-95 yrs, with a 5.2 v8 4x4 with auto tranny,,i can buy the tranny for 50 bucks but garages say it won't mate to my v-6,,my other option is to do a complete swap of engine and tranny ,,the doner truck is wrecked but complete and i can proably get everything i need for the swap for a song ,mabey around 100-150 ,,so my questions are ,,will the v-8 tranny work or if i can get everything cheap for the swap would it be a major project or would it be basically plug and play..i've read the post pertaining to the swap in the sticky but if i can get all the parts needed from a doner just what else would require changing ,,eg computer ,,exhaust ,,wiring harness ,,throttle linkage ,motor mts,ect ,,i really appreicate your imput in the the best way to go here,
thanks in advance

Yes the v8 transmission will work. It should just be a simple swap. Bolt patterns are the same and all. The connectors should be the same, as well as linkages and you stock computer would work. The only differnce inbetween the 2 trannys are the strenth it could handle from the engine.

If you wanted to do the engine swap you can, we have several posts about it and others say it is easy to do!

Default thanks

thanks for the info ,,i wandered about the trannys ,,my 3.9 mag is a strong runner ..has 170,000 on it.. but doesn't use oil and runs great ,,i talked with the owner of the doner truck and he said for the motor and tranny and anything else i'd need... 100 bucks so the price is definatly right ,,do i need the flex plate also from the 318 or will my 3.9 one work ?what about transfer cases ?will the v-8 and the 3.9 interchange without mods.?or do i need the v-8 transfer case for the swap?,,
i read the sticky on the engine and tranny swap out and it really doesn't seem to be a major project ,one thing i'm thinking about if i do the motor and tranny swap is if it would be easier to to pull the engine + tranny together as 1 unit and replace the same way,,i'm figuring i would have to mabey remove the transfer case to bring it out as 1 unit ,,anybody pull it this way?,,i still don't know if i'm gonna do a complete swap now that i know i can swap the trannies but it is an intresting possibility to think about,,and i've always liked the 318 motor,, thanks for the info on the tranny,,
hope i can return the favor some day

Holy crap there are 2 crazy's now =O j/k

Yeah you will need the V8 flexplate but I believe ur transfer case will work fine but id take the other one just for parts. and its easier to take it all out as 1 minus the transfer case just make sure you remove all the front end parts i.e. the radiator, condenser, grill, and cowl. That will give you enough to swing out the old and put in the new.

it is a pretty easy swap. if you do just do the tranny be sure to use the torque convertor out of the v8 tranny too, the input shafts are different. i would recommend doing the engine and tranny though, the 318 will make you much happyer! believe me, there is a big difference haveing 100 extra foot pounds of torque!

Default thanks fox

thanks fox,,the tranny sounds like the easiest thing to do right now,,i figured if the tranny wouldn't work then for the price mabey just change the whole package over,,a bit more work ..but still cheaper than a rebuilt tranny..the donor dakota isn't going anywhere soon,,it's kinda like a "in family situation",, thats the reason for the cheap price,,and down the road if i need the engine at some time i'll already have the tranny in...
thanks again for the info,,.
