Default Dakota Rack and Pinion steering

Does any know if the rack gear ratio is the same in the Dakotas with or with out power steering? I want to take off my power steering.

If so does anyone have a old manual rack that they would be willing to sell. My frame is either a 90 or 91. I really don’t remember.

I sure wish I could get it for you but. If you haven't checked maybe the on-line service manual. Just wondering why do you want to get rid of it. For the power you would gain? For me that would not be worth it. Even with a system that is designed for non power assisted steering it was still ruff and hard to turn at stops and slow speeds.

This is copied straight from the factory service manual:

An identification code located on the side cover designates
the gear ratio (Fig. 2).

² Code NZ designates 14:1 ratio

I hope this helps you... if you can find the code its referring to a dodge dealership might be able to tell you the ratio.

Default power steering

Power gains would be nice but more important it is in the way. I am looking to build me a turbo system and the power steering pump is right where i was looking to run my drivers side header. It is going to be tight on that side with out power steering and with it possibly could be impossible to rout it with out heat issues.

For a turbo you can mount is out back. There are kits. And with it mounted in the rear you don't need a inter-cooler. If you wanted to a twin turbos. There is plenty of room for it.

I dont like the rear mount systems in my opinion the oil return is a pain and you have more lag and also the exhaust looses some force in that far of a distance from what I read. I know there other opinions out there. I would much rather spend 200 on a rack and put the turbo under the hood. This is not a daily driver for sure. It is a weekend street rod that will see less than 3k miles a year easy. I have already picked out and have bought some components for the turbo system. I am still driving it with the n/a 408 until i get all the parts. I hope to have it done soon.

I just need to find out if i buy another rack will it be the same gear reduction as the hydro unit. Thanks for the help!

Speaking of turbos I'm in the midst of turboing my 2.5 - I was going to use my old manual rack on my dune buggy but if you need it I could probably part with it.
