Default 96 dakota trans

i have a 96 dakota and are having trouble trying to find a replacement transmission for it. but do the dodge ram with the 3.9 V6 or possibly the durango have the same transmission? i need a four speed with an overdrive. i don't know if it makes a difference or not but it's the V6 magnum

Yes those others should work, as long as its a 42re.

You could also keep an eye out for the v8's transmission... the 46re, its stronger and will bolt up fine.

Make sure you don't get a '95 or older transmissions, because they have a hydraulic governor instead of the electrically controlled one yours has. I believe a '97 and '98 will work as well, but I think that dodge dropped the 42re and went to the 45rfe in 1999... this one will not work.

thanks, is the 46re the only trans that will fit from a v8? but as long as it's a four speed with an overdrive it will work right? i don't know a lot about transmissions

Yes, the 46re is basically the same as the 42re but is stronger to handle the v8s torque. They are both 4 speeds with a fully electronic overdrive.

The decoding is...
4=4 speed
2/6= the torque handling out of 10
R= rear wheel drive
E= electronic governor

The '95 and older were the 42rh & 46rh... The h means hydraulic governor. The newer 45rfe is a fully electronic transmission, meaning it has solenoids instead of clutches. Your computer wouldn't know what to do with the 45rfe.

The 45RFE (or 545RFE, depending on year/options) that appeared late Gen 2 Dakotas, was behind the 3.7/4.7.
The 3.9/5.2/5.9 kept the same old 42/46RE on the Gen 2 Dakota's.
