so i called dodge and ran the VIn and they said my truck came with the 15 gal but i ran it out of gas this morning and then went and put 21+ gal of gas in it. my tank has has a narrow front and a larger rear i could this be some mess up?

 

Wow, it wouldn't surprise me if the 15 gallon tank could hold 16 or 17, but there's no way you have the 15 gallon tank if you put 21 gallons in it! But that being said, I would think if it was completely empty, the 22 gallon tank would hold just over 22 gallons, so I don't know what to tell you.

 

but keeping in mind he probably didnt run out of gas right at a gas station, so he probably had some left over from what he put in to get to the gas station

 

This is true. I guess I've never put in more than 20.5 gallons in my truck. I just can't get over the fact that dodge said it's a 15 gallon. My build sheet I got from dodge (which has been heavily modified by me :P ) says mine has the optional 22 gallon.

 

I have put 23 gallons in before. I thought I was going to burn up my pump running it that low.

 

It could also be that whomever owned the truck before, replaced the tank with the optional 22 gal. I know I would if I had the opportunity. Who wants to run out of gas in the mud bogs cause you only had 15 gals of gas onboard right...that extra 7 gals is like almost another 100 miles...

 

well it really messed with me becuz the damn gas light will come on and off all the time, and with the little engine and 2wd on mostly highway miles i went almost380 miles on a fill up i thought it might never run out. i had never gone more than 250 on a tank cuz the previous owner told me to.(i bought the truck in jan)
any way about the tank i went to the local dodge dealer and they said it was more than likely a swap at some point or the original buyer had it changed. which looks like the best explaination. the tank straps are to rusty to have been changed anytime soon.

also the can i carry in my truck is only 2 gal. and then i put 21 in so its the 22 for sure

 

I cant imagine having a 15 gallon tank on my truck. It gets 15 mpg on a good day. I think the "optional" 22g tank was a lot more standard than we realize.

 

My truck has the big tank and it is smaller in the front where it goes under the cab. I thought it was a 20 gallon tank, wasn't happy when I put 21 gals. in at the Rez one day. Thought there pumps were off. Maybe its a 22 gal tank.
