You can find 1 one of 2 ways...

1) Call dodge and give them your vin and ask them which gas tank
2) Carry a 1-2 gallon can of gas with you, let the truck run out of gas, put in enough to make it to the gas station, and see how many gallons it takes to fill it all the way up.

And FYI the bigger tank is 22 gallons, not 20.

Seeing as it sounds like you have to replace your sending unit anyway, when you drop the tank to replace the unit, it's embossed in the plastic right on top.

i have been thinkin about that. my buddy has a 1994 318 4x4 and his fuel gadge wont work either. is it just a issue with these tanks or what causes it? every dakota that i have ever rode in has had a bad sending unit or something or other.

It's a common problem with these types of units. Dakotas, Rams, Vans all have this problem. It's usually caused by a clip that is not properly secured or corrosion. There is a small write up in the FAQ about this, that would help to read.

If the front and the back of the tank look the same it a small tank. If the front of the tank is smaller it's the bigger tank.
