Default 1995 dakota 4x4 to 2x4 conversion

Hey, my dad has a 1995 dakota V6 4X4. His transfercase is about to go out and the people that he took his truck to said it would have to be rebuilt or replaced. This truck is pretty much on its last leg and he dosen't want to invest that kind of money into it. So i thought the idea up that if he took his transfer case out and removed the driveshaft to the front axle he could run the driveshaft for the 2 wheel version of his truck which would be a lot cheeper then replaceing the transfer. My question is will my idea to him work or is the transmission for the 2 wheel drive truck different then the one for the 4 wheel drive? Well i will appriciate all the feed back i get from this post thank you all for your help!!

The transmissions are different. The rear of the 4x4 transmission housing is designed to bolt the transfer case to it and the output shaft is not designed to support a slip yoke. Your dad would have to get a 2wd transmission and then find a longer driveshaft to compensate for the new distance between the transmission and rear diff... but a transfer case swap is much easier. You should be able to find one for under or around $200 at a junk yard, and they can be swapped in an hour.

A transfer case swap is easy and I bet you could find one for cheap.
