Yes, I know the dunking I think. If it is worse in first gear, mild in second, it is not just you or your truck. I have a 3.55 gearing ration listed on the under side of my hood, with an 8.25 Chrysler rear axle, and yeah, it “dunks” if we are talking about the same thing. The best example I can give you is coasting through rush hour traffic here in Chicago, if I am coasting forward with a lot of gas in first and take my foot off, I get thrown forward and it feels like riding in a semi truck. It is bad, but if you are riding alone I just deal with it. If you feather the gas it isn’t as bad, but it is still not great. You have to feather to accelerate and decelerate to make it less. Especially uncomfortable for passengers I have been told. Let me know if this is what you are referring to.

As far as the boot and heat coming up from the transfer case shifter boot, I will tear the thing out this weekend and take some pictures for you. I haven’t noticed any great amount of heat coming from it, but I also have an infrared thermometer and will get you temp readings on that and the trans tomorrow when I am out on the road.

Send me your email and I will take some quick video and show you what it does in mine, maybe it will be a good enough video for you to get an idea if this is what you are talking about.

That is exactly what I'm talking about! It's extremely rarely felt in 4th or 5th, but 1-3 is bad, especially in rush hour traffic when it can get hard to feather the gas. I'm glad to hear it's not just mine.

my email address is *deleted*. Thanks in advance for your help.

Alright, well I haven't unbolted the plastic frame around the boots off yet, but I did use an optical thermometer and got some readings for you. After driving for 40 minutes at about 70 mph on the expressway, my transfer case boot was at 95 degrees at the hottest spot, one of the lower points. The stickshift boot was cold. I checked the trans and it was at 160 degrees. I will take the boot off in the light and get you some photos of what they have going on down there, but at least this is a start for you.

Sweet... so far the transmission sounds like its running at a normal temp, I just gotta get the heat out of the cab!

I had to use liquid nail to seal up the boot at the bottom. For me it was the noise. I'm sure that trick could work for heat.

Well the problem isn't leaking air as much as the actual rubber boot is reaching 130+ degrees. I can't believe it hasn't melted yet :P And as for noise, it is a lot louder, but I think the sound is actually resonating off the transmission shifter.

my little zuki makes that noise too, but it makes so many noises i just rock it. you shold make a sheet metal plate to block some of the heat.

That's a great idea!! Why didn't I think of that. A simple peice of sheet metal half way between the top of the tranny and the body should work great as a heat sheild. I'll weld one up next week! Thanks!

Have you checked for bad tranny or motor mounts? I get a decent clunk at below 1500 RPMs if I let off the gas, other than that it's pretty smooth. It's a just the combined slop in the tranny, t-case and and rear axle causing it.
