Default Can someone with a 5 speed please tel me...

1) if you have it in gear and let off the gas, does your transmission make a kind of "slapping" motion/sound accompanied by a jerk, or are the gears in mine wearing out?

2) how much heat should be coming off this transmission, cause I can feel a lot of heat through the floor. I'm not the best at guessing temperature, but it feels like it's reaching about 200 or so degrees.

I of coarse, don't have a 5 speed but I'll post I'm broad.

The rear diff's ring and pinion gears can have to much lash in it and causes that slapping but you said it's coming from the tranny so I don't quite know what would cause it.

Dang that tranny sounds like it is overheating! There is a manual tranny oil cooler kit you can buy. I think it was in the last issue of OFFROAD or PATERSON'S 4WHEEL Magazines. I don't know if you have a good tool store in your area. You can buy the laser Thermometers for cheep, under $20. To see what temp it is. And if you know anyone with a manual tranny check there's or go to a parking lot and check someones that just parked.

I know you already checked to see if you have enough oil in it!

It's not the u-joint, I replaced that last weekend while I was putting a new rear seal in the transmission. It's also not the ring and pinion gear... when I put in the trac-lok back in january I set the backlash to exactly .006 of an inch like the manual says to and the gears themselves looked brand new as far as wear goes. And it really feels like its coming from the transmission. I remember my last 2 cars having a similar feeling when you let off the gas hard, but they weren't as bad.

The transmission is full of fluid, I checked that after replacing the seal. I might have to look at that transmission cooler, but what I don't understand is (as far as I'm aware) there is no fluid pump in a manual transmission, so how would the fluid get to and from the cooler?

I have some actual numbers now. I took your advise and went and got an optical thermometer.... like I said, I'm not the best and guessing that kind of stuff. It's reading between 145 and 155 degrees. But the 4x4 shifter boot where I said the heat was coming up through the floor was reading about 130 degrees! I should look into getting some kind of insulator to keep the heat out of the cab, but I don't think ~150* is too much to worry about as far as the transmission's operating temperature considering its bolted to the engine and the Y-pipe crosses under it. I do want to know what the actual fluid temperature is inside the transmission though.

I get a jerking motion when I am in gear and let off the gas. But I don't know about a slapping noise though.

You have the NV3500 transmission in yours? I have the AX15, it does get really hot while I am driving too, but not enough to feel it through the floor. Mine also calls for a different fluid than yours though, guessing that could make a difference. I will take a look when I go out and see what I have in terms of insulating material around my shifter boot.

Thanks! Yes it is an NV3500. I only have what I got from the guy I bought the parts from to swap transmissions (I had a 46rh auto). I have no idea what all was included in the factory set-up for the manual transmissions as far as insulating goes in the floor pan. Heck, I don't even know if I cut the hole properly for the shifter, but it works. The heat is mostly felt in the transfer case shifter boot. Like I said, it was reading 130 degrees. Could you take a picture or two while your looking?

Also, it may be better described as a clunk rather than a slapping noise. If I am accelerating, and let all the way off the gas quickly, it clunks and jerks forward fairly harsh. I just want to know if its normal for these transmissions or if there is excessive play in mine.

my truck has an auto but i hear a noise from time to time that are exactly how you describe them above. if i hammer it after being on the brakes going around a corner or a time when i dont stop completly it does just that. when i let off from the gas i get a thump and it fades as i let off.
