Default 8.25" to 9.25" swap

So i just read the thread on swapping a 8.25" to 9.25" rear end by 96bad_3.9 and he has a 96 with a 318 and used a 99 durango rear end. I would like to do this swap and was curious what 9.25" rear ends will bolt into my 89 Dakota 2WD soon to be 4WD.

Thanks guys

ooh, thats a good question. Your truck, being an '89 has the 5x4.5" lug pattern, whereas any dakota or durango 9.25" will have the 6x4.5" lug pattern. The dodge rams that have the 9.25" have a 5x5.5" lug pattern. I'm going to go with none of them will fit, unless you plan on changing the front hubs to the 6 lug (I don't know what that would involve). Maybe somebody else can tell you for sure how to make it work.

Also, keep in mind that Dodge 2wds are axle over spring and 4x4s are axle under spring. So either look for a 4x4 rear end or plan on welding new perches if you get a 2wd.

Actually, after doing some further investigating, it looks like the '74-'79 Ramchargers, W100 and W200 pickups used a 9.25" rear with 5x4.5 lugs. You may want to check up on the width of the axle though, since those are full sized trucks, it might stick out too far.

hmm i will do so, Also i am aware that right now as a 2Wd its currently axle over supsension and since i am converting to 4x4 it will be axle under. And i will probably change to a 6 lug up front as well i dont know how but there is a guy on here that did it so i will message him.

Thanks

to solve the front axle bolt pattern issue couldnt i just get a different front end...Like if i were to do a SAS just get another 9.25" front axel? wouldnt that work???

If you stick with IFS, you might be able to get hubs with the 6 lug pattern, but I'm not 100% sure if they'd swap so don't hold me to it.

As for a SAS, Chrysler doesn't make a corporate front axle. You'd have to go with a dana 44 or dana 60 for the front, but they don't make 6x4.5 axle shafts. All you really need to keep in mind is whatever axles you find that will fit, just keep the lug pattern the same front and back and then look for wheels later. Also, make sure if you do a SAS you get an axle with the drivers side pumpkin... chevy uses passenger side.

YES for up front i did some research and gen 1 bronco axels are probably what im gonna go with so like a dana 44. I dont know they're bolt pattern but i can always get new axle shafts with a matching bolt pattern... Haha this going to be a fun project this 89 dakota of mine. Lets see, 4x4 conversion, lift, V8 swap, 390 stoker build SAS, Rear 9.25" swap... OMG this might take awhile.

Thanks

If you're going to SAS don't bother with the 9 1/4, good luck getting 6x4.5 hubs for a D44. You'd be better off using an 8.8 or 9" in the rear.

I think your missing the point here, im looking for a 9.25 rear end, which will have a 6 lug pattern either 6x 5.5 or 6x 4.5 depending on what vehical i get it from and im just going to put in a gen 1 bronco front axel dana 44 with matching lug pattern to my rear. I have found several diff axle shafts with 6x4.5 and up pattern so ill be fine. Not disagreeing with you but where would i be able to find a 8.8 or 9" rear end for my 89? which is currently 2WD but will be 4x4 before i swap rears.

Thanks

I looked a little into the ford 9". What vehical, or what is the best ford 9" i might want to look for? As far as ease of install and strength.

Thanks
