Hey great job on the paint, i was curious cuz im going to be doing some body work sililar to yours. Mainly inner wheel wells, maybe fenders stuff like that. What did you use (products, process) to prep your fenders ie. sanding what did you do. I have a paint gun so where can i get paint for it? What kind do i use.
Thanks

Strip the fender to bare metal with a wire wheel. After the paint is stripped, make sure the metal is clean! This means sanding the entire sheetmetal surface and wire-wheeling any contaminats such as, rust, filler and paint remnants. The major body work should be done at thi time, ex: Body modifications, patch panel work, and getting rid of dents, etc.
Of course, you know the finished work is only as good as the preparation, so spend as much time as it takes to get a clean base. Make sure to wipe down the bare metal with Wax & Grease Remover.
After area is all cleaned up and all the body is how you want it. You can use fiberglass filler to fill and dents, that you cant pound out with a hammer or for scratches that arent sandable. Then just simply sand the filler until the fender is straight and there is no divets or the dent that you filled doesnt stick out.
After the area is cleaned with wax and grease remover make sure it is completly dry before you begin priming. For Primer I used Squeeg's Epoxy Primer, which is also called an etch primer to many autobody shops, where you can get online or at an autobody sales shop. Also for the paint and primer stick to the same brand. There is no really bad paint, its just depending on how the person painting works it!!
For primer as I said before make sure it is clean and dry, before applying. Do 2-3 thin coats, of primer, letting sit 30-45 minutes inbetween each coat. Dont do thick coats to cut time, the final product wont turn out as good, if you just take your time.
Make sure between each coat of primer the surface is clean. DONT USE WAX AND GREASE REMOVER OVER PRIMER, IT WILL EAT UP THE PRIMER AND LEAVE YOU WITH A HUGE MESS.
Let the last coat of primer sit for 6-8 hours before painting. For paint I used Diamont Auto Paint, http://www.autobodysupply.net/category-s/103.htm I order online. But you can get paint and primer and clear coat at any autobody sales shop. Just keep to the same brand names. Also get primer the same color as the product your painting. So if your doing white get white primer along with white paint.
For paint I did 3 coats. When you spray make sure your spraying from one end of the fender to the other end. Dont stop in the middle because you think you missed a spot, Just go over it again from end to end in an even line. If you stop in the middle it will make the final product come out blotchy and uneven. Let paint sit for 45-1 hour between each coat. After all coats of paint have dried. Let stand for 24 hours before putting it on your truck to ensure the everything is cured.
As for cleaning the final product I dont recommend you use Wax and Grease Remover, You can use turtle wax, or you can order this great line of exterior cleaning products. You can order it at www.autoglym.com there is really good stuff on there.
If your not sanding your fender down to bare-metal, what I would do is first off sand with 80, then 120, 220, 320, and end with 400 grit. Before applying primer.
As I said before To make your final product turn out make sure you keep the area your working in and the area you are working on extremly clean. And take your time, the more you cheat on taking time the worse your project will come out.
Hopefully this helped you out!
