Default Fusible Link Problem

Hi! I have a 1990 Dakota 3.9 automatic that won't work. A white 22 gauge fusible link wire keeps burning out. At first it was intermittent but now as soon as I turn the key to the run position the link pops. Actually, I talked with a auto electric Guy who told me I could replace it with a 20 amp fuse so I did but the fuse just pops one after another. With this fuse popped there is no gas or spark. With fuse in I am getting no juice on ASR #30. Can't see any apparent shorts. I took out all the fuses in the fuse block and it still pops the link on run. Weird stuff! I really need help with this. Any ideas? Thanks!

It sounds like the wire has a short somewhere. Trace it everywhere. It must be cracked and touching ground or it is pinched or something. Unfortunately there it not much more I can tell you over the Internet. It is something that has to be seen in person. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply! I was checking the wiring diagrams and it looks like the white link is connected to the ECM the ASR and the ignition switch Could any of these cause the described problem if they were defective?

Yes, it could definitely be a chaffed or pinched wire near the ignition. This is especially probable if you have a tilt-capable steering wheel.

Only thing I can think of is look closely at the wiring diagram and remove fuses in hopes to isolate the bad sub-circuit.

Thumbs up

Thanks for your help guys! Found the problem today. The front left cab to frame mount is gone and the cab was pinching a wire against the frame. I only went through about 25 fuses before I figured it out ha ha ha! Thanks again!
