To make it louder put some glass packs on it. Cherybombers. To some those can be to loud. Flowmaster has sound bits on their website. You can hear them before you buy it. Cuting the cat will change the sound but not by much.

well this morning we were going to do it in the shop at school, well as soon as we got the sawzall up the the pipe my teacher came over and told us not to do it in the school shop because he could get in trouble, so we just pluged the hole in the cat with a bolt and called good, we are going to do it at my buddies house on friday night he has a pipe fitter and everything so it should go pritty good.

FWIW the old 2.9 in my Bronco II was MUCH louder without a cat, like ear splitting loud. Removing the cat is also a federal offense.

Gutting the cat I've also noticed, creates a ticking/empty can sound, which is not that pleasant.

I 've worked on a van with the 5.9 engine that has a Y pipe after the cat and a 20 inch long cherrybomb plus 2.5 inch diameter piping and it sounds very nice, deep tone but not annoying, and loud but it passed inspection.

Getting a longer glasspack will create a deeper rumble but the frequency may be so low it'll make things vibrate a lot more, so 20-25 inches in length is enough

Gutting the cat is the stupidest thing you can do in terms of getting rid of it! It will in fact harm the engines performance, cause the exhaust gasses will expand in the open chamber and then require work to be recompressed (and that work is coming from the engine). If you're going to remove the cat, cut it out completely and replace it with a peice of straight pipe... thats how I have mine and it got a lot louder. I also have a flowmaster 40 and it sounds sick! (especially engine braking)
