Seriously I would be down to cut it up and mail it to dodge

I'm doing some troubleshooting on a '96 I picked up a couple of weeks ago. When I turn the key nothing happens, but I can start the truck by jumping across the starter relay. I pulled the ASD relay for testing, I have power with key removed on terminal 30, I have voltage on terminal 86 with key on, I get nothing with key to start position (turned all the way forward). Does this indicate a bad ignition switch?

Thanks,

Well, first step, hit the FAQ message (the third sticky at the top of the message list for this subforum), go about 40% down, and grab the 1996 factory service manual.

I say that because I'm about to reference pages in that, and you'll want it to check what I mention.

Now.

Pin 30 should have power all the time; it's run straight from Fuse D in the PDC (reference page 8W-11-9)

Pin 86 should have power both on start and on run; if it drops on start, I'd say the ignition switch is failing (again, see page 8W-11-9).

So yes.

Thanks for the quick reply. The switch seems logical to me, but the electrical stuff is not my strongest area.

Default Same problem

take it easy guys
I'm dealing with the SAME EXACT problem! I've swapped out some of the fuel injector lines and coil lines/ harnesses and changed the relays but still having the same issue. Every time I start her it blows the ASD fues.. I'm at a lose as what to do. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

ASD powers the injectors, coil, and a few other things. You have a dead short somewhere on that circuit. Wiring diagrams are going to be a requirement.

I found this forum and thread this morning, truck is repaired and running good. I had no idea where to start.

Hey guys,

Thanks for letting me pick your brain.

I have a 1996 Dodge Dakota with 2.5 manual. I have no spark at coil?

I am a pretty good mechanic and troubleshooter so I am thinking it is the ECU.

This is what I have tested and replaced.

1st...battery voltage 12.5V. ASD fuse has power. ASD relay has power to 30 when off and 30 and 86 when key is on. Bypassed relay and jumped 30 and 87, still no spark.

2nd...replaced coil, no spark. replaced corroded distributor pick-up module, no spark.

3rd...tested Crankshaft, 5.2volts and continuity to ground good. sensor OK.

4th ... continuity check from battery ground to coil and injector tested good.

5th...pulled PDC and checked for corrosion or loose wires, everything was perfect.

Replaced faulty fuel pump previously and truck was running good? died as i was pulling out of the driveway?

You guys are the Dakota GURUS, What else can I possibly check? I fear the ECU crapped out

Please help!

Thanks in advance.

David

You would be better off starting your own thread, list vehicle year, explain problem
