Tearing down 318
I am about halfway dismantled. Just wanted to post some pictures as I go along. I am in the process of cleaning stuff now as I take it out. Really happy with how clean it is inside.
318 on the stand...

After I got down to the heads...

Maybe I finally figured out the code to get the pictures in??

When your on the flicker page with the picture you want. Right button click on the picture. Go to properties. Highlight the address (URL) and copy it. Right click and go to copy. Or you can right button click on the address and go to select all. Then copy. On the post section click the icon that looks like a picture. Then paste it in the small popup.
Time for updates. I have come a long way today.
Removed the heads and prepped the block...

Primed...3 coats

Painted...3-4 coats

Untaped...

Replaced rear main seals, timing chain cover gasket, front crankshaft seal, painted oil pan, painted all the heads and intake manifold...I am sure I did some other stuff too. Also really glad I did the seal replacements, found a blown plenum in the process. Woudl have been pretty pissed if I had finished it all only to have to replace the plenum in the truck.

A good picture I think showing what a bad plenum looks like. I ordered my aluminum plenum plate from Hughes today. At 48,000 miles this happened pretty fast. My brothers truck had it go out at 35,000 on his 318.

Anyone got any hints on replacing the dampener? I am going to go to autozone tommorrow and look for the replacement tool, but they haven't been much help. I couldn't find the tool to install the front crankshaft oil seal either so I fabricated one out of wood and used the original bolt to pull it into the timing chain cover. Now I need the installer for the dampener. It will need to have the same thread as the bolt that holds the main pulley and dampener in. ALmost like a hub installer tool.

Looks really nice in those colors. I think I missed the very beginning of this endeavor you started. Is this an engine swap, was there something wrong with the engine that caused you to pull it, or did you pull it just to clean it up? I want to do my engine but, I'm waiting til something really goes bad on it so I can justify pulling it to rebuild.
BTW...I must compliment you on cleanliness of your shop. I think perhaps if I kept my garage that clean and organized I might not mind working on my vehicles again...hehe

I tracked down a 318 with 48,000 or so miles on it and a tranny from a 2WD 1997 Dakota. I am swapping it into my truck, but since mine is a 4WD I needed a 4WD tranny, so instead of messing with a good NV3500 trans, I went out and got a used NV4500HD trans.
Before I put anything back into the truck it is getting cleaned, getting new gaskets, and getting minor upgrades. Hopefully it will all pay off in the end.
