What are you looking for? Manual or auto?

I have been looking for trannies for a while now, and I can tell you that you will be hard pressed to find one for $300 in good shape, not to say it won't happen, but if you have been looking for 6 months you might need to look into paying a little more. The cores are usually $200 - $300 alone if you need to turn one in.

I understand the money thing, I would say keep an eye on Craigslist. You might be having to make a little drive too, check in WI, MN, and MI.

You might be able to get something in the $500-$600 range a lot more easily, and honestly, that is a good price I think.

Here you go. Research and make sure it would fit, I am not too up on the auto trannies.

Try goin through the junkyard, and look for one with lower or around your amount of miles on it,
and How much would it be for a rebuild?

No, he's got a 1996. The 42RE or 46RE will work.
42RE or 46RE can't be used on 1995 and below trucks.
42RH and 46RH can't be used with 1996 and above.
2WD transmisisons WILL NOT work with 4WD, and 4WD transmissions will not work with 2WD.

Since he has a 42RE in there, he can use one out of: a 42RE from any 1996-(whenever they stopped using the 3.9L V6) Dodge Dakota or Ram.
He can try using a 46RE from a 1996-(whenever they stopped using the 5.2 or 5.9L) Dakota, Ram and Durango.
