Default Soldier needs advice

Hi im Sam, im currently in iraq but when i return i plan on working on my truck and driving it back down to Georgia from Minnesota. I want to add as much performance as i can to the thing because it seems to be lacking. The truck is a 1991 dodge dakota, 2.5l 4 cyl 5 speed manuel, its pretty much as base as you can get plus the ac is broken and im looking into that too. The body is fine there is practically no rust on the thing thats why im looking to work on it. So if anyone has any sugestions for anyways to improve my hp or anything at all let me know

I don't think there are any performance parts for the 4cly. You can try Searching all these sites to find the options. www.summitracing.com http://www.mopar.com/performance/index.html
http://www.hughesengines.com/Index/index.php www.ebay.com

Your best option for power especially for the price is swap in a V8. Our FAQ2 in this section has several posts on the V8 swaps. Nothing from a 4cly. But it is the same concepts.

Hey man, Welcome to DF. And first off... Thanks for serving! This world is a better place due solely to people like you!

I have to agree. The dakota is too large of a vehicle for a 4 cyl motor. I doubt you will find any performance parts for it, and IMO, for what its worth, id just replace the truck with one that already has an 8 in place.

I picked up a 95 v8 dakota last year at auction for $2500 and it only had 70,000 on the clock. If you are going to Georgia, I would recommend buying one from down there instead of MN. I lived there for 4 years and saw first hand the salt problems.

Use the 4 cyl for good mileage to drive to georgia and then swap it for a v8 dakota down there.

Pm sent too

I would do the swap if you want more power, but that is my personal opinion. You can find a good deal with low miles probably. Probably the best value for your money too in terms of performance upgrades.

the reason I wouldnt do the motor swap is because I am in the middle of one myself. The only reason I am swapping is because the other one siezed (user error ) and with out replacing the motor, the truck is worth nothing. If the truck is fine the way it is, my opinion is just to upgrade the whole truck. You have to look at it from a time stand point. How much is your time worth?

If you enjoy this kind of work and it would be a fun project, then I'd say give 'er hell! But if it is something you CAN do, but would rather be muddin and drinkin beer.... then pass.

I have been swapping my motor for like 3 weeks now. No, I only have like 10 hours into it, but after working all day and with all the other projects I have going on, thats the last thing I want to do in the evenings/weekends.

It all depends on wether you would enjoy doing it or not. and how much your time is worth.
