Default Replacing 3.9 oil pan... Help!

Hey guys,

Well, I found out it WASNT the bolt that was leaking. I just thought it was because thats where it was dripping from, but in reality it was leaking from the side of the pan and running down to the bolt. Its all rusted to hell - going to have to replace it. My question is, what do I need to do to replace it? It looks like its gonna be a pain to get at the bolts... Any tips? Also, how much (approx) do oil pans run?

Thanks a million guys

i thought my pan was leaking and asked a couple knowledgable people and they told me that i would have to pull the engine to get to all the bolts. i then looked at it more closely and saw that it was the oil sending switch that is next to the distributor cap and i do not have any more leaking.

It is in fact the pan leaking. Its rusted really bad, so i took a wire brush to it. Sure enough, I can see the oil coming out from where the rust is. I hope I don't have to pull the engine... I don't have the money nor tools.

Pull the engine or remove the front axle to get to it.

Check summit racing or jcwhitney for prices. Offhand I want to say around $100 if I am remembering right.

I picked up some JB weld (great stuff) and cleaned the rusted area asbestos I could, sprayed down with brake cleaner, and slather on some JB. I plan on applying a few coats of JB and then some RTV sealant over that and everywhere else. I just need it to hold for a few months, so hopefully It will hold for a while, at least until I get it on the road.

JB weld is great but don't trust your life with it. A small leak of oil can leave you stranded when you are in the middle of no were and no oil in the engine.

It is not going to be permanant, and I plan on keeping some spare oil in the back at all times just in case. This patch will be just until I can get it safetied, e tested, etc, and then I'll take it to one of my mechanics and get it replaced.

I agree. No way to take off the axle and get to the pan? Shouldn't need an engine hoist for that. Pretty sure a lot of guys do this themselves and it isn't as bad as it sounds?

I just got myself a nice hoist a few weeks ago which is why now I am all about pulling any motor I have. LOL. Oil change? No problem, pull it. JK.
