Smog pump is an air pump. It may have some kind of actuator activated by vacuum. I don't know. You can check the FAQ for the service manuals and get a better description on its operation.

the smog pump is the air pump it has a couple vacuum lines going to it that controll valves but im pretty shure the vacuum is creatived by the intake i have a 87 toyota that dosent have a air/smog pump so it must get the vaccume by the intake just like i think the dakota dose i just had to put the vaccume lines togeather on my truck to make it run without the air/smog pump so idk if it has anything to do with the vacuum just with diluteing the exaust with fresh air to pass emisions i have no idea how some parts of a truck works so dont quote me lol

any upgrades that anyone suggests? was thinking about getting a k&n airfilter dose it really increase gas mileage? and any tricks to getting better gas mileage? and any suggestions on what brand of spark plug wires i should use?
