Question 4x4 tailhouseing

okay im not sure if this is a dumb question or not.but i was woundering if its possible to swap out transfer cases..because the ones on are dakotas come out along the drivers side with the front drive shaft yet most othiers come out along the passanger side.so leading to my question is it possible.i ask this cause i noticed a 89 ramcharge with a 318 and a 5 speed standard in it but the transfer case comes out under the passanger side so can i just swap the transfer from mine to the five speed or is that a negative.

If you look closely, the entire engine/drivetrain on our trucks is offset to the passenger side. It would not be easy at all to switch up the transfer case due to a lack of room to work with and you'd have to get a passenger side front axle. I'm not saying its impossible, just impractical.

if you have the time and funding, and don't mind the work, it could be a perfect excuse for a SAS. though, how exactly is the entire drivetrain offset? are the motor mounts bias to the driverside? i would find it hard to beleive that a tranny from a passengerside drop wouldn't work with a driverside t-case.

If you look at it the engine is offset to the passenger side. That gives the transfer case more room between the frame rails.

Like 318 said.....its possible. I wouldnt wanna mess with it, but it could happen.

ya it was just an idea was woundering if it was possible to just put my transfer case on the standard transmission but if it offset which now that you say it i do remeber that everything is a little to one side.

like a say was just a thought want a standard really bad but the v8 dakotas were i live are very rare specially with a standard tranny.except one junk yard had one but he wount let me buy it because its not of the same year as my truck i believe he has a 88 and a 97 and he says it wount work and i dont want you bringing it back asking for your money back.itethier he is right that it wount work or is a little slow.

owel thinking about a possible 12 valve build up for my dakota.i know a guy that has one and wants to get ride of it so idk mybe.lol

thanks for your guys help

If you want a manual transmission, you can look toward the Ram. They have the same engines as our truck. You'll want to look for an NV3500. It doesn't matter how they are set up on the Ram, they will work with our trucks.
