Default Dual gas tanks?

I was thinking about setting up my new 2wd with a fuel cell when the time comes, and at the same time thinking of using the factory fuel tank as a second tank in my 4x4, giving me a 44 gallon capacity. Anybody have any experience with setting up dual fuel tanks? I know some 90's ford pickups ran dual tanks. What would I need to switch between the two?

Yea you would need a switch to decide which tank to run. As far as the actual running of the fuel lines you could go a couple ways. I would suggest running to a yard and checking out a truck that has them equipped to maybe get a switch and the equipment to slave them to the same fuel line.

i'm pretty sure the switch is used to switch from fuel pump A and fuel pump B. pretty easy i would think.

then you need a Y connector somewhere where the fuel lines from each pump meet into one going to the fuel rail

I understand that the F150 uses a low pressure fuel pump in each tank, and that pairs of supply/return lines from each tank go to a reservoir unit. From the reservoir unit, a single pair of supply/return lines go to the high pressure fuel pump, which goes to the fuel filter and up to the engine compartment.

seems like there's alot more involved actually

Hey Brian, can you put some pics of the 2WD up some where?, id like to see what this one looks like, and back to the subject where would you fit another gas tank?

I'll get some pics tomorrow when its light outside. Right now theres not much left to take a picture of though! The engine, transmission, driveshaft, exhaust system, gas tank, and all body parts in front of the firewall are all off.

I'll fit the other gas tank in one of two places, either directly across from the current one and reroute the exhuast or behind the rear axle where the spare tire goes (that whole assembly is already gone).

I have thought of dual tanks alot. I would like to, but if I did, I wouldnt mess around with switches and additional fuel lines.

I dont have it all planned out yet, but I would add the second tank and then about a 2" tube connecting them at the bottom and a small vent line connecting the top. No need for additional pumps, lines, switches, filler necks, etc.

The truck would have the appearance of one tank, but nocited big time when you go 500 miles on one tank! haha

That would be cool. Are you sure you can fit in that 2nd tank. Can you afford 44 gallons when the gas goes back up. Lets see right now its about 2.50per gal. $110. or at $3 or $4 per gal = $132 - $176. Not to mention the extra weight. Just gotta give ya hassle.

That would be sweet though. Fill it up and don't have to worry for a month or so. Or with my MPG for 2 wks!

Yeah, I'm thinking 2 weeks also!! 93 octane around me is at 2.79 a gallon right now, but hey, you gotta buy the gas at some point right?!? As for the weight, 44 gallons of gas at about 7 lbs a gallon is about 310 lbs. So we're only talking about another 155 lbs on top of what the truck already holds in gas, so thats not even another person my size to carry around (I weight 195). Lol, trust me, I already thought of these things!
