1996 5.2 Dakota Trans. Problem
I have a 1996 Dakota 5.2 w/ auto trans. It shifts fine from 1st to second but you have to let off gas a little to get it to shift to third. Overdrive kicks in just fine. Also if your in high gear and you floor it to get passing gear, it wants to shift all the way to first.
The trans has never slipped. Is this electrical or mechanical?
I have taken it to 2 tranny shops and they say the seals are shot. Doesn't make sense to me.
Help please.

You should start by adjusting the TV (throttle valve) cable. That is the only mechanical valve in your transmission, the '96s and above became electronically controlled, so if its not the TV cable, it could be an electrical issue.
I would never have believed it in a million years. This transmission had a mind of its own. If you drive it real easy it would shift out ok kinda. If you take off at normal pace it would shift to second late.....then not shift into 3rd at all unless you run it up to about 50mph and let off and then it might shift and it might not. You never knew what it was going to do. Worked better cold than hot.
This is a miracle in a can. SeaFoam Trans Tune. I poured this in and the tranny instantly shifted like it was supposed to. I mean instantly. I cannot believe how fast this stuff works.
I was ready to drop the pan and change pressure governor and sensor but but whatever the hell is in that can healed it up.
I highly, highly recommend!!

Fluid level just right, changed many many thousand miles ago.
Had Lucas in it forever but it never helped.
I'm telling you Trans Tune was instant. Every time I drive it now I just shake my head the difference.
And remember 2 supposedly honest trans shops told me it was shot and needed a rebuild.

I also used the seafoam trans-tune. 3 days ago. I will say I'm impressed with the results. My tranny was a little hesitant shifting from 1st to 2nd. Had to get the rpms around 3k, Now it's like new and if it weren't for my slightly loud exhaust, I wound not know it shifted through ALL gears
Smooth! I also recommend it.
