I have 1996 dodge Dakota 3.9 v6 that is stalling when u take your foot off the gas. It hesitates while driving sometimes it it feels like it died when driving but I hit the gas and for sevral pumps there is nothing then it chugs comes back to life and back fires. This seems to be worse in the evening or when its cold outside.

How about the crank and cam position sensors?

What codes are it throwing?

Since it's 1996, it's OBDII - have you connected a competent OBDII reader and seen what the data stream says is going on?

I just replaced the intake gasket on mine, leaking internally. I took off the throttle body and looked inside with a light and seen filmy residue on the inside. Probably a small leak but enough to make it die and come back to life again. I was getting a misfire on cyl 1 once in a while but that's about it for codes. Easy enough to check and it don't cost anything to have a peek inside. I had no external leaks on the intake which would give you a vacuum problem. Only air and fuel in the intake is allowed....a little moisture really messes you up. Listen to your exhaust at an idle as well. Mine was sounding all jarbbled, now it's just a steady pule like it's suppose to be.
