Default Crankshaft Position Sensor question

Can anyone tell me, is the crankshaft position sensor for a manual transmission the same as for an automatic transmission?

Also, will one from a 6 cylinder work on an 8 cylinder?

No, they are different for the auto and manual. Yes, they are the same v6 or v8.

No problem! Thats why we're here! Just out of curiosity, what do you have going on that needs a new crankshaft position sensor? They sure are a PITA to get to!

Hard to tell what is going on. The fuel pump does not work unless you run a jumper wire to it. Then it does not build up pressure. The engine will fire if gas is poured down the intake.
There are no broken wires anywhere that I can see.

Sounds like you may have 2 problems.

First it sounds like you have the notorious splice problem. There is a power splice that gets corroded and will cause power problems. It is just below the Power distribution center. Check the FAQ for a good description of it.

And second the fuel pump not putting out enough. It may just be dying. You may have to replace the entire fuel sending unit, which it can be as high as $200.

+1 to what Crazy said. If it fires at all, then the crankshaft position sensor is not the culprit, cause if that sensor were bad, then you would get no spark at all.

Checked the power splice and it seems fine. I've replaced the fuel pump already but the fuel pump relay kicks out and doesn't send power to the fuel pump.

Try replacing the relay (or swapping it with another known-good relay)
If that doesn't work, and you said you replaced the fuel pump assembly, your looking at wiring, somewhere. Probably between the PCM and the fuel pump relay.

The PCM provides a ground to the ASD and fuel pump relay to "turn them on" (separate circuits for each) and that might not be working right. Or it could be the positive feed from ignition switch. Or... you know, goblins are haunting the wiring.

Okay,

First of all, thanks for all the suggestions. Found out that it was a ground wire. Cleaned up the connection, put it back and it worked. But now it runs rough and blows black smoke.
